Change from Chaotic to Charismatic Experience

Chaotic experience, once it becomes sufficiently distressing, leads group members to feel that the only way out of the chaos is to locate a leader who will magically deliver the group from the chaos. Chaotic experience eventually creates a sentience group that is mobilized to make a change. In this case the notion of locating a leader and getting the person to act promises to minimize the personal responsibility of this group’s members. It also avoids the threat of failure or shifts it to the leader, who must then confront those who are comfortable with the chaotic experience. The group’s expectations are made clear once a willing leader is located. The leader must then work hard to fulfill them or face being metaphorically annihilated by the group. Those supporting the leader gradually become larger in number and progressively more supportive and submissive as the leader begins to provide clear direction that is thought to be effective. Gradually the leader assumes more and more control that is accompanied by the development of excessive power, authority and control. Remaining opponents are subordinated, isolated or perhaps “outplaced.”
