One of 3M’s criteria for promotion in the R&D arena is
knowledge sharing, demonstrated by participation and leadership in the Tech
Forum, writing and publication, speeches, and mentoring. Knowledge sharing and
creation is a promotion criterion at more senior technical levels. Successful
project leadership includes knowledge-managing behaviors such as early
recognition that an idea will not work and shutting down the project,
establishing lessons learned, and increasing 3M’s knowledge base for future
innovation. In another example, 3M’s Tech Center employees are evaluated by how
many divisions they persuade to adapt a technology platform into products
(knowledge transfer from the laboratory to the business).
