A General Process For Lessons Learned

Figure 10.14 presents the steps in the process of using lessons learned. As with issues, a number of comments are appropriate.

  • The maintenance of the lessons learned database and its updating are performed by the coordinator function defined earlier in the book for the multiple international projects.

  • The project leaders cannot afford to treat lessons learned lightly. They need to take them seriously and enforce them being considered. Their attitude should be “Why reinvent the wheel again and again?”

  • Some might think that this will take time away from the project. Any time spent reviewing and updating lessons learned is more than offset by the increased productivity.
