How will you deal with those who are really good at CI?
Here, consider one problem that is not recognized as much as it should be.
People who are good at CI tend to be retentive, in a psychological sense. That
is, they seek out and retain everything they can, on the basis that "some day"
it might be of use. The problem may start as one of too much data solicitation
or of excessive data retention, but it ultimately becomes a problem of
processing and storage.
The person who seeks data for the sake of collecting it is a
kind of mental "pack rat." For example, one member of a CI unit may suggest that
the personnel department inform him of the last place of employment of staff who
are newly hired and of the place of next employment of all those leaving the
corporation. This sort of data may be useful for monitoring a particular
competitor's recruitment efforts to determine changes in research and
development activities. If the data is not being collected for a particular end,
however, you may not want to collect it at all.
