Exit Paths for
Staff
Where do you go in your own firm to recruit people to staff
your CI unit? As noted, you need people with a flair for analysis and good
communications and interpersonal skills. These people are typically the ones
most often seen as candidates for rapid promotion and long-term development in
other areas within the firm. To attract them and keep them in the CI unit, you
must avoid creating dead-end positions. As a result, a promotion line must be
established from the CI unit upward and a decision must be made about where the
unit is located and to whom it is administratively responsible. Moreover, this
must be done before the unit is created, if possible. If
good employees see no way out of a new unit, they will not volunteer to join it.
Even if they are transferred in, they will make their own way out, usually to
competitors.
